On May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex and Transphobia ("IDAHOBIT") is celebrated worldwide. It commemorates an important human rights milestone: on 17 May 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Since then, this date has symbolized the fight against discrimination and exclusion based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The IDAHOBIT remains highly topical in 2026. Anti-queer and anti-trans discrimination, hate violence and structural discrimination continue to shape the realities of life for many LGBTIQ* people in Germany and around the world. The current social and political developments require visible solidarity and a determined commitment to human rights and tolerance.
To set an example, rainbow flags will be hoisted at many town halls in the Kleve district and at the district hall on May 17, 2026. The equal opportunities officers will also have information material on the topic available.
The rainbow flag is the international symbol of the queer community and stands for acceptance, diversity, tolerance and equality - and for the fight against criminalization, stigmatization and exclusion. It serves as a symbol against discrimination and for pride in one's own identity. The equal opportunities officers fully support these demands and are committed to the diversity of society and peaceful coexistence in the district of Kleve.
