The renovation of the last part of Kevelaer's town center renewal, Peter-Plümpe-Platz, has also been successfully completed. And this marks the end of this chapter, which began in 2014.
To mark the occasion, the official closing party took place last Saturday (April 25, 2026) in the best spring weather on Bürgerplatz at Peter-Plümpe-Platz. Around 200 guests came to celebrate this milestone with a small party.
Mayor Dr. Pichler looked back on the past years and the various measures of the city centre renewal and was pleased about the worthy conclusion with the upgrading of Peter-Plümpe-Platz. "The redesigned squares are still the backbone and calling card of our city center and have been strengthened in their function as public spaces, which also benefits local retailers and residents, because attractive places lead to a revitalization of the city center," said the mayor. "And thanks to federal and state funding totaling 60%, the municipal contribution to the measures was kept within limits." He took the opportunity to say "thank you". To everyone involved, but also to all citizens and retailers for their patience and understanding over the last few years.
Marcel Wiegand from the Greenbox planning office also addressed the guests and reported on the planning and development process for the inner city measures.
The closing party was accompanied by a small supporting program. There was a stand where the climate team of the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer provided information about its work and the ADFC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club) was also on site with an information stand. Rainer Kalscheuer from DSK Process Management offered a tour of the town center renewal measures.
For the kids, there were two bouncy castles and a construction trailer where they could paint. Grubi, the mascot of the town center renewal, also made an appearance and was a popular photo subject. French fries with currywurst, coffee and cake as well as cool drinks and relaxed music rounded off the festival.
