In the following, some general notes are described or notes on specific name explanations are given.

If at least one of the spouses does not have German citizenship or one of them has several citizenships, special regulations apply. A consultation at the registry office is absolutely necessary.

Required documents
Subsequent determination of a common married name
If no joint married name was determined at the time of the marriage and the marriage still exists, the joint declaration to determine a joint married name can be made at a later date.

Addition of the maiden name or family name to the married name
The spouse whose maiden name has not become the common married name may add (precede or append) his or her maiden name or the family name used at the time the married name was determined, provided the married name does not consist of several parts. If the name to be added consists of more than one part, only one part of this name may be added.
In these cases, we recommend that you contact the registry office in advance.

Reassumption of a previous name
A spouse who has a married name may, after the dissolution of the marriage, resume his or her maiden name or the surname used until the determination of the married name. Children under the age of five who have the declaring person's surname as their birth name participate in the name change, older children only if they join the name change.

Revocation of the addition of a name to the married name
The declaration of the addition of a name to the married name can be revoked, and it is then no longer possible to add it again.
