44 interested people took part in the presentation followed by a discussion. The speaker was Christiane Conliffe, a certified nutrition and menopause consultant. The evening was organized by Kevelaer Marketing and Equal Opportunities Officer Christiane Peulen.
The main contents of your presentation briefly summarized:
- Hormones: Which hormones play a role in the menopause, what functions they have in the body and what consequences a drop in these hormones can have.
- Symptoms: Common complaints were explained - from hot flushes to concentration problems and forgetfulness ("brain fog") to risks such as bone loss and osteoporosis.
- Phases of the menopause: premenopause, perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause (from 12 months after the last period); symptoms can occur long before the end of the period.
- Self-help measures: Advice on herbal remedies, relaxation exercises, exercise and sporting measures to strengthen the bones as well as conscious nutrition.
"It is important that women find out what is good for them - the menopause is a time of change and opportunity," says speaker Christiane Conliffe.
The participants' assessment of the event was consistently positive: much of the information was new, and in some cases surprising. At the same time, a need for more understanding, particularly in the professional environment, and for further education in society and medicine was emphasized.
Background
Around 9 million women in Germany are going through the menopause. The symptoms are distributed very differently: around a third have hardly any symptoms, a third have moderate symptoms and a third have severe symptoms. The onset and duration of the menopause vary; it usually occurs from the mid-40s, but can also start earlier and last for 10-15 years.
Early information and education help to better classify complaints and take timely measures to improve quality of life.
Many thanks for the great presentation and the numerous participants!
